Fountain in Piazza Colonna. The fountain in Piazza Colonna was designed by Giacomo della Porta (1532-1602) and carved by Rocco Rossi between 1575 and 1577. The marble basin is decorated with the heads of sixteen lions. A circular stone vasque stood on a pedestal in the centre of the fountain and water poured from it into the basin.

The Column of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina which stands in Piazza Colonna in Rome is thought to have been erected by Commodus in memory of his father and mother sometime around 180 CE. The column was inspired by its more famous predecessor Trajan's Column which was set up, also in Rome, in 113 CE. The column carries representations carved in high relief of the emperor's successful military.

History. As many of you might have guessed, Colonna district was named after the victory column that is placed on the main square (piazza) of the district. The total height of the column is 39.7 meters long. It was built around 180 AC, in an honor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The column is covered in spiral picture relief depicting the victory.

The spiral picture relief tells the story of Marcus Aurelius' Danubian or Marcomannic wars, waged by him from 166 to his death. The story begins with the army crossing the river Danube, probably at Carnuntum.
